Ms. Carrie Mae Billings, a loving mother, devoted sister, and a cherished grandmother, of
Fairmont, NC, heard her name called and peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, September
10, 2024. She was 77 years of age. A native of Maxton, NC, Carrie was born on October 27,
1946 and was the third daughter of the late John and Fannie Mae Campbell.
Carrie’s personal life was fulfilling. She was a strong woman of faith, having accepted
the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. In 1966, Carrie graduated from Rosenwald High School. In
1970, Carrie met Walter Ray Billings and the two joined Holy matrimony. From their union, they
raised six children and instilled in them the importance of hard-work and family.
She utilized her talents and skills in textiles and worked for companies such as Fairmont
Knitting Mill, Converse, Badgers, Gerber, Osterneck, the Carlton, and Smithfield Packing, from
which she retired in 2005. Her dedication to her work was instrumental in the production of
high-quality garments, which she often handcrafted and generously shared with others. After her
retirement, she became an avid reader and developed a passion for traveling. She enjoyed
exploring new places and meeting new people with her cohort of friends, affectionally known as the “Sunshine Seekers”.
In addition to her parents, Carrie was preceded in death by her treasured four sisters:
Naomi Freeman, Idell Savage, Pearlie Mae Pittman, and Katie Mae Campbell.
Carrie is survived by her six children: Lisa Campbell of Proctorville, NC, Chris Billings of Raleigh, NC, Tony
Billings of Fairmont, NC, Andrea Billings Utley (Mark) of Lumberton, NC, Walter Billings
(Kimberly) of Fayetteville, NC, and Melissa Kirby (David) of Lumberton, NC; her beloved
brother, James Wesley Campbell (Shirley) of Marietta, NC; one brother-in-law, Moses Billings of Winston Salem, NC, and three sisters-in-law, Blanche Billings, Savannah Gaddy (Levi), and Mary Billings all of Fairmont, NC.
She leaves to cherish her memory, twelve grandchildren and nine great grandchildren, as well as a host
of nieces, nephews, and cousins. She also leaves to cherish her memory close friends, who loved her
dearly: Ms. Sharon Mitchell, Ms. Marguerite Qualls, and Ms. Mary Louis Graham. Carrie’s
warmth and generosity touched the lives of all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed.
