Ms. Bertha Hill Tribute

Ms. Bertha L. Jones Hill was born to the late Thomas Jones Sr. and Daisy Jones on August 20, 1945. She departed her earthly life at home on October 17, 2024.

Bertha graduated from Rosenwald School in 1963. After completing high school, she journeyed to New York as a professional home care worker for five beautiful girls who loved and cherished her dearly. Upon spending time in New York, she moved back home in 1967. Bertha went to work at South Robeson Knitting Mill, whose name was later changed to Munsingwear, for 32 years. She loved working in the cutting department, where she was a faithful worker until the plant closed in 1999.

After leaving the plant, Bertha pursued the calling of a healthcare professional. She was also the cook and baker of Jonesville until God called her home. As she was affectionately called, Aunt Bert was dependable, generous, and famous for her homemade sweet potato pies, which she cooked for friends and family on any occasion. Bert loved with only the love that God can give: “Agape Love.” She never said “no.” If she had it, you could get it.

At an early age, she joined First Baptist Church Fairmont. She was faithful in duties there and later joined Jones Chapel under Dr. Thomas Jones Jr. She was called by God and served as a Deaconess until her health failed. She was also voted Mother of the church, which she did faithfully. She loved her church and her church family.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, the late Thomas and Daisy Jones, her late husband, Larry Hill, her son Bobby Jones, sisters, Ada Hayes, Clementine Jones, and Annie Ruth Thompson, brothers, Jerry and Dwight Jones.

She is survived by a loving daughter of the home, Barbara Jones, and granddaughter, LaKeisha Monique Jones of Tennessee, one grandson, Darius Montel Jones (Leigh) of Asheville, NC; five great-grandchildren, Ke’Sean Davis, Braxton Jones, and Donavan Jones all of Asheville, N; Mahogany McCrae and Gregory McCrae of Fairmont, NC; two sisters, Maryland Green of Fairmont, NC; and Lillie Jones Lindley of Hephzibah,     Georgia; three brothers, Dr. Thomas Jones Jr. (Ruby) of Lumberton, NC; Ray C. Jones (Judy) of the home, and Donald Southern of Lumberton, NC. She leaves to cherish memories of a special cousin who was more like a sister, Janice Powell, and a special sister-in-law, Avis Jones, a special friend Junior Spears, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends and relatives is too numerous to list but not forgotten. The family would like to acknowledge Bert’s dedication to caring for Barbara Boone, whose life was enriched by Bert’s love and support.
