Ms. Bernardette White-McCoy, endearingly called “Bernie” or “Brenda” was born the middle of three children on Friday, January 12, 1959 to Curtis White Sr. and Phodie Elizabeth in Lumberton, North Carolina. Upon the untimely death of her mother, Bernardette and her brother Curtis moved to New York City to be closer to their brother Robert White. They resided with a cousin fondly called Aunt Lou in the Bronx. After some years, Bernardette decided to return to Lumberton. She returned home to her stepparents William Powell Sr. and Alice and two of their children Renee Butler and William Edward Powell Jr.
Wedding bells chimed for Bernardette and Alvin D. McCoy in 1990. Alvin’s military status as Army Chaplain afforded the couple the opportunity to travel abroad, living in places like Germany and Greece.
Bernardette was employed at Burger King in Lumberton for close to thirty years, where she worked as a faithful cook until her retirement in January 2019. Bernardette loved cats and loved to dance. She was an avid reader and quite exercised in cross word puzzles; she was also a creative crochet designer and a true movie buff.
In her home, on the morning of Sunday January 19, 2020 Bernardette White-McCoy departed this world after a long battle with colon and liver cancer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Curtis White Sr., and Phodie Elizabeth. She was also preceded in death by her eldest brother, Robert White, her cousins, Gloria Jean Powell, Erica Nichelle Gortman, Ronnie Lewis, Martinez Butler and Aunt Lou.
Fond memories, funny antics and wise advice will live on in the lives of the many people Bernardette touched.
