Ms. Barbara Mitchell Tribute

Ms. Barbara Jean Stewart Mitchell was born on March 2, 1948, in Fairmont, NC. to the late Edward Stewart and Mildreen Stewart. She left her earthly home on June 19, 2021, at UNC Health Southeastern Hospital, Lumberton, NC. She was affectionately known as “Bob.”

Barbara was raised in a close-knit family worshipping together at Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church and attending Rosenwald High School in Fairmont.

After school, she married Clarence Mitchell and moved to Jersey City, NJ and later New Haven, CT.  She returned home and worked at Perdue Farms in Dillion, S.C. until health issues led to an early retirement.

Barbara never met strangers, armed with jokes and quick responses she could put you at ease or make you blush. She was a very giving person, always thinking of others. “Bob” was a great cook and loved to cook for family gatherings, especially her mac n cheese, pasta salad, and homemade cornbread.  She enjoyed spending time with her nephew Ja’Quan McRae and listening to Gospel and R & B music.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Marguerita Stewart Dickey, Edna Stewart Cooper, Alice Faye Stewart McCallum, and brother, William “Hammer” Edward Stewart.

She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving daughter, Allison Regina Stewart of Fairmont; a caring and loving sister, Patricia Stewart Boone of Kinston, NC; three grandchildren, Shamberal Stewart of Greensboro, NC, Brandon Walters (Martayia) of Alexandria, VA, and Jalen Walters of Fairmont; a special longtime friend, Broadus Scott of Fairmont NC;  Nieces: Donna Cooper of Fairmont, Monica Boone-Moss (Akim), of Linden, NJ, Tashia Edwards of Benson, NC, Tarin Stewart of Elizabeth, NJ, Terrell Stewart (Cyn Bien) of Mesquite; TX;  a nephew  Bryant Dickey (Sharonda) of Villa Rica, GA; a Sister-in-law, Linda Stewart of Jersey City, NJ ,and a special cousin, Ann McCallum of Manchester, NJ; She also leaves a host of great nieces & nephews, other relatives, and friends.
