Retha Jean Ekwunoh, 57 of Lumberton, North Carolina was born on December 4, 1962 to Emma Jackson and the late Carl Dockery of Lumberton, NC. She found everlasting comfort in the Lord’s arms on March 28, 2020.
Retha graduated from Fairgrove High School with numerous honors. She went to further her education at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke; where she met her loving husband. She began to work for McNeill Jewelers for a number of years. She then sought out a career in nursing at Southeastern Community College until her health began to interfere with her studies. After beating a health battle, she went back to SCC and became a licensed esthetician. While working and attending school, she was a member of Pentecostal United Holy Church where she was a Youth, Combined, Senior & Mass Choir member, Usher and Finance Committee member. She absolutely loved her role as the Church Announcer. She also occasionally enjoyed joining her husband at St. Francis Catholic Church. She was united in holy matrimony to Frederick Ekwunoh and from this union two beautiful daughters were born, Sicily and Darian Ekwunoh. During her battles with her health, she acquired her fur-baby Casper Jr. (CJ). Retha genuinely loved and cared for her family, friends and fellow church members; anyone she came across. Most of all, she always voiced her love for the Lord. She possessed such a sweet spirit, kind heart and gentle soul. She was known for putting others before herself. She never let her health stop her from being the playful and joyful Jean that everyone knew and loved. Her pride and joy remained her children throughout everything. Anytime she was not at home, she could be found in the passenger seat of a car riding around town until sundown.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory, two sisters, Sharon Byrd and Latisha Jackson both of Lumberton, NC. A brother, John Derrick Jackson (Mary) of Lumberton, NC. Aunts and uncles: Rose Barnes, Arister Hammonds (Mae) both of Lumberton, NC, Carolyn Parks (Joseph) of Raleigh, NC, Mary Howze (Dosker) of August, GA and preceded in death Josie McCallum of Lumberton, NC. She whole heartily loved each of her eight nieces and four nephews. One special niece, Emmarld Miminger and a special cousin, Larry McCallum Jr. Along with a host of cousins, friends and classmates.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, A private family celebration of life service will be held for the immediate family.
