Mrs. Priscilla (Berry) Leazer

     Priscilla Berry Leazer transitioned from the mortal life to immortality on July 31, 2022. The
second oldest of eleven children born to the late Mr. and Mrs. Hiawatha and Lurenda Moore
Berry, Sr. on June 30, 1940. Priscilla attended the Public Schools in her home counties of Surry
and Stokes in the state of North Carolina. She furthered her education by earning a B.S. Degree
in Mathematics and Science at Livingstone College, Salisbury, NC, in 1962, with graduate studies
at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC and Kent State University, Kent, OH. She
was united in Holy Matrimony to Samuel Leazer of Salisbury, NC, December 24, 1965. From this
union two children were born: Dr. Tyra Monique (Jeff) Holman, Morrow, OH; S. Marcus (Lois)
Leazer, MBA Durham, NC.
     Priscilla was a high school educator for 33 ½ years. She began her teaching career at Peterson
High School, Red Springs, NC and retired from Lumberton Senior High School, in the Robeson
County School System. She served in numerous capacities including President of the NCAE and
the Parent-Teacher Association for W.H. Knuckles Elementary School, member of the ACT
Association and the Robeson County Retired School Personnel.
In addition to her career endeavors, her heart’s joy was serving others in her community and
her church family. She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church (W. 2 nd St) in
Lumberton, NC where she served in many capacities including: President of the Women of the
Church, The Senior Missionary Department, and the Pastor’s Aid Society. She worked with the
Children’s Department as a teacher of Sunday School and the Baptist Training Union, and as
chairperson of the Program Committee. She served on the Ladies’ Usher Board, the Nurse’s Aid
Society, the Trustee Spouse’s Society and was also Mother of the Deacon and Deaconess
Boards. In the community, Priscilla served on the Trustee Board of the Robeson County Public
Library System for 26 years, as a charter member of the Trustee Board of the Robeson County
Play Station, member of the Robeson County History Museum and the Lumberton Civic Center
Board. She was also a member of the Trustee Board of the North Carolina School of Math and
Science, Durham, NC and a life-long member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
      Priscilla was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hiawatha and Lurenda Moore
Berry Sr., husbands, Mr. Samuel Leazer, Sr. with whom she shared 45 years and Mr. Benedict
Rouse, a sister, Mrs. Leron M. Meredith, three brothers, Mr. Hiawatha Berry, Jr., Mr. Anthony
Berry, and Mr. Gregory O. Berry.

     She leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Dr. Tyra M.(Jeffrey) Holman of Morrow, OH, a son, S. Marcus (Lois) Leazer, MBA of Durham, NC, a bonus
son, Mr. Michael Rouse, Washington, DC, four sisters, Mrs. Mary (Fred) Gwyn, Elkin, NC, Mrs.
Golda Ellis, Durham, NC, Mrs. Melanee Bennett, Pilot Mountain, NC, Dr. Gloria Berry-Holly,
Hillsborough, NC, two brothers, Mr. Charles M. (Helen) Berry, Haw River, NC and Mr. James I.
(Margaret) Berry, King George, VA, bonus sisters, Mrs. Mary Brown, Pastor Emma Jean Carter,
and Mrs. Clara (James) Carter of Mt. Airy, NC, bonus brothers, Mr. C.W. Webster, Elder Robert
(Evangelist Beverly) Webster, Mt. Airy, NC, Mr. Franklin Webster, Columbus, GA and Mr.
Sherman Webster, Winston-Salem, NC. Three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruth L. Houston, Mount Ulla,

NC, Mrs. Annie L. Pruitt, Salisbury, NC, and Mrs. Hattie Evans, Atlanta, GA. One brother-in-law,
Mr. William Dudley, Wilmington, NC, one aunt, Mrs. Verlie Madge Haynes, Mitchellville, MD.
God-children Hiawatha ‘Butch’ Berry, III, Abdul Ellis, Maggie Holly, Bria Berry-Holly, Shaunta D.
Johnson, William Dudley, Jr., Yasmine McKiver and Joyden McKiver. Many nieces, nephews,
cousins and special friends.
The family would like to sincerely thank everyone for their support, kindness and prayers during
this time.
