Lena Genelda Kirk Thompson was born on Saturday March 7,1936 in Gray's Creek, NC to Mary Lizzie Kirk. Her earthly journey ended on Thursday January 4, 2024 at her daughter’s home in St. Pauls, NC.
She was educated in the Cumberland County Schools, and worked for many years at Converse and Gerber Manufacturing. Lena was a member of First Baptist Church, attending for many years with her family. She became a member of Cromartie Temple of Praise in 2007, where she served faithfully as a member of the Mother Board until her health began to fail.
Lena was preceded in death by her mother and her stepfather, James Evans,
Sr.; four brothers: Marion Evans, Larry Kirk, Herbert Evans, and Laddie Evans; three stepbrothers: Gilbert Evans, James Evans, Jr., and Sylester McMillan; her sister, Dorothea Williams; one son, Mozell McNatt, Jr., and two daughters, Geraldine and Mae Lena McNatt.
Family members left to cherish her memory are her husband, David Thompson, of the home; three sons: Anthony Thompson (Gwendolyn) of Charlotte, NC, David J. Thompson (Yisha) of Charleston, SC, and Dean O. Thompson (Trina) of San Angelo, TX; three daughters: Sharon Campbell (Harold) and Gloria Melvin (Rev. Earl), both of St. Pauls, NC, and Annie Thompson-Opoku (Haruna) of Charlotte, NC; two brothers: King Evans (Bernadette) of Fayetteville, NC and William Evans (Alice) of Lumberton, NC; two sisters: Minnie Scott of Queens, NY, and Sarah Smith (Walter) of Lumberton, NC; two sisters in law, Sylvia Evans of Lumberton, NC and Paulette Evans of Greensboro, NC, fifteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family offers special thanks to the staff of Liberty Hospice, Dr. Robin Peace, and the Pastor and members of Cromartie Temple.
