Emma Helen Welch was born on May 7, 1938 to the late Lennew Gilchrist Jr. and Annie Neil McMillian-Gilchrist. She departed this life in the comfort of her home on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Welch and three siblings, Leroy Gilchrist, Edward Gilchrist and Nathaniel Gilchrist.
Emma was educated at Rosenwald High School, after graduating she attended Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. Later, Emma made her home in Brooklyn, NY where she worked at Pharmacy Veteran Administration until she retired. Emma was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church for a number of years. While at Mount Sinai, she also served faithfully on the usher board. Later, she relocated back home, Fairmont, NC. She rejoined her home church, First Baptist Church, Fairmont. Emma was an active member of the usher board at First Baptist Church, Fairmont until her health failed.
Emma leaves to cherish her memories: 1 sister, Margaret (Charlie) Lynch of Greensboro, NC; 4 brothers, Rev. Jimmy (Carolyn) Gilchrist of Lumberton, NC, Jethro (Sarah J.) of Lumberton, NC, Terry (Berniece) of Fairmont, NC and Jerry (Frances) of Fairmont, NC. Three sister-in-laws; Glenda Gilchrist of Lumberton, NC, Rev. Mary Gilchrist of Marion, SC and Elizabeth Welch of Brooklyn, NY. A host of nieces, nephews and special friends.
