Clara Lee Dixon McArthur was born on August 2,1932 in Hallsboro (Columbus County) North Carolina to the late George and Liler Godwin Dixon. She entered eternal rest early Monday morning, October 29, 2024 at UNC Health Southeastern, Lumberton North Carolina.
Clara was joined in marriage to the late Thomas McArthur, III on July 11,1954 in Dillon, South Carolina. To that union two sons were born Larry and George McArthur. George preceded her in death. Clara was the second oldest of six children. Two sisters: Carrie May and -Emmer Dixon preceded her in death and three brothers: George J., James P., and Elijah Dixon preceded her in death.
At an early age, she accepted Christ and joined New Light Missionary Baptist Church, Hallsboro, North Carolina. After her marriage to Thomas, she joined New Zion UMC where she worshipped faithfully until her health failed. She was a dedicated and faithful member serving in many positions including: church secretary, member of the senior choir, adult Sunday school teacher, Worship and Membership Care Leader, and a member of The United Methodist Women of Faith. Also, she was very active in the community and used her nursing skills to help people by checking blood pressures and glucose, assisting with administering medications, and changing bandages, etc. She was known for her love of people and family.
Clara received her education from the Hallsboro Artesia High Schools of Hallsboro, North Carolina and earned a Nursing Degree from Hamlet Hospital School of Nursing, Laurinburg, North Carolina and became a LPN. She was employed by Southeastern General Hospital, Lumberton, North Carolina for 10 years. She also was employed by Pembroke State University, Pembroke, North Carolina as a nurse in the Student Infirmary until her retirement in 1996. After her retirement, she volunteered for a local nursing home in Pembrooke, North Carolina.
Clara enjoyed planting and growing flowers, cooking, watching soap operas, solving puzzles, watching Wheel of Fortune, and the news.
She leaves to cherish her memory a dedicated son, Larry D. McArthur, of the home; step daughter, Clara Wren Washington, of Greensboro, North Carolina; four grand- daughters, LaChrista McArthur and Makaria McArthur, of Mooresville, North Carolina, Angela R. Bullard, Greensboro, North Carolina, and Francine McArthur Fisher (Gavin} Rowland, North Carolina; one grandson, Mario Grant, Dillon, South Carolina; one great granddaughters, two great grandsons, one-great-great granddaughters; two sisters-in-law: Daisy Dixon of Brooklyn; New York and Virginia McCallum Dixon, Raleigh, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews, and host of relatives and friends.
