Mr. Robert (Bob) Lee Barnhill, Jr., son of the late Robert Barnhill, Sr., and the late
Mildred Whitted Barnhill, was born on February 8, 1933 in Lumberton, NC. Bob
passed away peacefully on June 11, 2024 at Bladen East Health and Rehab in
Elizabethtown, NC.
He attended Palmer Memorial Institute located in Sedalia, NC from elementary
through high school and graduated in 1951. After high school, Bob was drafted
into the Army and served several years. After completing his commitment to the
United States military, he attended Livingston College and received a degree in
Chemistry in 1958. While at Livingston, he met his first wife, Peggy Duncan. As a
result of the marriage, they had two children, Robbin Barnhill and Robert Barnhill,
III.
During his marriage, he and his family lived in several cities. Initially, he, his wife,
and their daughter, lived in Reidsville, NC, where he taught school. They
eventually moved to Gary, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois, where his son was born.
In both cities, he continued teaching. The family moved back to Lumberton, NC.
Bob taught in St, Pauls, and was an assistant principal at St. Pauls Junior High
School. Bob later decided to start a new career at the Division of Vocational
Rehabilitation Services in Lumberton, NC where he was a Counselor. He worked
here for numerous years and finished his career at this organization.
After moving back to Lumberton, Bob reconnected with a teenage sweetheart,
formerly Katie Blount. This resulted in his second union of marriage. They
married on December 26, 1981. Katie had 2 daughters, Kathy and Montese from
her previous marriage, which lead to a blended family with Robbin and Robert, III.
Bob and Katie were married for almost 40 years.
Bob was a dedicated and devout Catholic. He was a big fan of the Pittsburg
Steelers and the Washington Redskins but later he became a fan of the Kansas
City Chiefs. He was an avid golfer and he made many friends on the golf course.
Throughout his life, he enjoyed travelling with family and friends, fishing, cooking,
and watching westerns.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Barnhill; his son, Robert Barnhill, III;
his parents, Robert Barnhill, Sr. and Mildred Whitted Barnhill; and his aunt, Rose
Barnhill. Left to cherish his memory are his sister, Madelyn Clawson; his
daughters, Robbin Barnhill, Kathy Smith, and Montese Davis; his daughter-in-law,
Erica Barnhill; his granddaughter, Maya McDonald; nieces and nephews; and a
host of family and friends.
