Leverne was wed to the late Helen Bethea McKinnon from this union the couple were blessed with 10 children. Leverne eventually retired from a career as a landscaper, but for most of his life he was a farmer and this was his true passion. After retirement he continued to grow and care for his garden with his late wife family. He was an outgoing person and made many close friends. He loved his family and could make anything into a teachable moment with his particular style of unique wisdom. If his children or grandchildren didn't know something he thought they should, he was in his words "tryin' to learn ya something". He had a soft spot for children and could always be counted on to have sweets like peppermints, Mary Janes, or Orange Slices to hand out. Memories like these are now deeply cherished by his loved ones. The world will not be the same without him.
He is survived by seven sons; Tommy Bethea, Ray Charles McKinnon, Gary (Royce) McKinnon, and Jarell McKinnon all of Lumberton, NC; John (Leona) McKinnon of Greensboro, NC, and Michael McKinnon of Hope Mills.
