Mr. George A. Hughes

June 17, 1934 ~ March 30, 2020 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Mr. George Hughes Tribute

George Arthur Hughes at age 85 years old passed into the arms of our Lord Jesus
Christ on Monday, March 30, 2020. He will be cremated and services held after the
coronavirus 19 is no longer a threat to social gatherings. Another notice will be
published at that time. So many friends and family have already sent condolences.
George was a great partner with the activities of the Child Injury Prevention program
and the RCHD Employee Fund that he asked that instead of flowers, donations be sent
to RCHD Employee Fund, 460 Country Club Road, Lumberton 28360 in his memory.
George was born in Brooklyn, NY. youngest son of Ethel Holly (Green) and Thomas
Arnold Hughes. Baptized in1934 and Confirmed in 1948 in Brooklyn. He graduated Sth
grade and graduated from Chelsea Vocational High School in Manhattan NY, earning an
Award of Honor in English in June 1952. He entered the Navy in Oct. 1952. Discharged
in Oct.1956. George then entered the Air Force in Aug. 1957. Discharged as a Staff
Sergeant in 1963. He moved his family to Woodsedge Rd Wind Gap in 1966. He had
married in 1953 and was divorced in Dec 1971 from Dorothy Duerr with whom he had
three children. He had his first conversation on the phone with Linda on New Years Eve
1971 and married her after a 20 year courtship in Feb. 1991. George worked as a
Shipping Yard Inspector at the Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem, PA. After 26 years, he
retired in 1990. Moving to Orrum, NC in 1994 joining the Proctorville Baptist Church
and making so many wonderful friends. George and Linda fostered 14 children over 10
years and had 2 exchange students: He loved Kendrick and Kenneth and Jan and Jana
dearly. He had contact with them until his death. George was predeceased by his
parents Ethel and Thomas Hughes, his beloved brother, Thomas Hughes, (wife, Joan)
of Florida and his daughter, (neighbor, helper, and blessing) Susan Elizabeth Hughes.
He is survived by his children. He considered himself to be truly blessed by his
daughter, Patricia Hughes, and his son, Steven Hughes (spouse Sandy), both of PA and
his children by marriage, Therese Peters (spouse Ron) of NC, and Arlana Corrocher
(spouse John) and Charles Bennicoff both of PA. He loved his 10 grandchildren
Jennifer and Jason (spouse Ann), also Ammie Bushell (spouse Brian), Shawn
Davidheiser (spouse Nicole), Tony Corrocher, Patrie Corrocher (Jackie), son of Kristin
Burleson: Jamie Kirk Byrd (spouse Emily); the children of Michele Flora: Amber Cordero
(spouse Jonathan), Connor and Joshua Bennicoff and he was ever so proud of his 11
great-grandchildren; Caitlin, Hailie, Cassie (Alice), Jaydon, Kyleigh, Bailey, Austin, Caylie,(
with one more on the way), Bowen Ryker, Ayvah and Ariella.. Also, dear to his heart
were his brother’s children; his nieces, Carol Ann Rupeka (Michael), Ann Marie Stewart
(Giles), Joseph Hughes (Allison), Patrick Hughes (Kelly) and 13 grand-nieces and
nephews with 12 great-grand nephews and nieces, and one great-great grand; all from
Tom and Joan’s family! Also he was blessed to have a brother-in-law Terry and                                                                                                                                                                                  sister-in-law, Vicky Mace and nephews Michael and Eric (spouse Cassie) and his
grand-nephew Brandon. George and Linda were especially blessed by many friends,
especially Charles and Marilyn Hart, Sally and Tom Stralecki, Ada and Bob Barnes and
family, Emma and Dewey Davis and family, and Betty Ivey and her son Furman Ivey.
Faye Leggett and family and so many others. George was so thankful for your
friendships. His family expresses gratitude to all who shared his life and joy of living.
God bless you all.

Finally, George passed from this world in the arms of the one he leaves to treasure every
memory of the last 49 years, his wife, Linda Hughes.
