Mr. Albert Roosevelt Jackson

      Albert Roosevelt Jackson, affectionately known by family and friends as “Velt”,
departed this life on the evening of May 22, 2024, at the Angel House Hospice Care
Center in Whiteville, NC, after a brief battle with cancer the last couple of months of his
life. Born on May 29, 1953, in Fairmont, NC, he was the 2 nd of 6 sons born to the union of
the late John Luther Jackson and Nettie Mae Jones.
     Velt spent his earliest childhood years in his hometown being reared with the aid of his
aunt, Sarah Belle, alongside his brothers and some of his closest first cousins, who
were more like siblings; while his mother and her sisters found work in NY to make a
better life for their families. Once attained, the family began migrating from their home
for many generations in Robeson County, NC to their new homes in Port Chester,
Westchester County, NY.
     Velt attended White Plains High School. He was employed by General Foods in White
Plains, NY for many years. After which, he served as a taxi driver in Mount Vernon, NY
and NYC. He established many impactful and lasting relationships with his passengers
over the years.
     In his younger years, Velt was seen as a father figure and protector for his brothers, the
responsible one, and someone you could always depend on. Over time, those roles
began to change as life had its hills to climb and struggles to endure. Even at his lowest
moments, he was always still loved by his family. He loved working on air conditioning,
refrigeration, and carpeting. One of his happiest moments included laying carpet for his
Aunt Thelma before her passing. He was known for being an extremely skillful Chess
and Ping-Pong player. He played with some of the best chess players on Ferris Ave,
White Plains Park, and Lake Street Park. In the final month of his life, after a lifetime in
NY, he returned to his place of birth alongside 2 of his brothers.
     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his firstborn son, Rondell
Jackson; younger brother, Andrew Jackson; stepfather, Richard Spruill; maternal
grandparents, John Wesley Jones and Delia Taylor; paternal grandparents, Luther
Jackson and Ottie Mae Cobb (Arthur McCoy). He was also preceded in death by the
following aunts and uncles: Mary Lillie Paige, Annie Worley, Sarah Belle Flowers, Lizzie
Jane Scott, Thelma Jones, Essie McQueen, Bessie Jones, Barbara Pittman, John
Avery Jones, Albert Jones, Wesley Jones, William (Ed) Jones, and Theodore Jackson.
      He is survived by 2 sons, Daunte Jackson and DaLance Jackson; brothers, John
Jackson (Linda), Jerry Jackson, Rev. Dr. James R. Jackson (Tierra), and Daniel
Jackson (Shirley); grandchildren Kimberly, Martese, and Nassir Jackson; one great-
grandson, Kinnari; one aunt, Christine Johnson; a special cousin, Larry Jones; former
wife, Noreen Jenkins-Fillyow; and mother of his youngest son, Sharon Calloway. He also leaves to cherish his memory, a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, extended
family, and friends.
