Jimmy Delane Bristow (affectionately known as Bris Bris, Slim Jim, and JB by his loving wife) was born on November 14, 1953 to the parents of Louise (Taylor) Bristow and Robert Bristow of Fairmount, North Carolina. He transitioned from this life to eternal life on Wednesday, August 24, 2022. He was educated in the Port Chester Public Schools and graduated high school in 1972. Jimmy loved sports! His love for boxing and basketball was great; oftentimes when you were looking for him you would find him playing basketball over at Don Bosco Community Center in the pro-am league with “Dr. J and Jo Jo White”. Upon graduating high school, Jimmy immediately joined the workforce and became employed at Avon in Rye, NY. After leaving Avon he became employed by Dannon Yogurt as a supervisor for more than ten years. With his strong work ethic and experience he accepted a managerial position at the Manhattan Mortgage Company in Purchase, NY where he worked for fifteen years until his retirement.
While in retirement Jimmy decided to return to school to further his education. His education and achievements were both spiritual and secular. He enrolled in a degree program at Mercy College. Upon attending college he was led to pursue a degree in Christian Theology at Christ Theological Seminary, where he received both an Associates Degree and Bachelor’s Degree. In 2007 he received his certification as a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) while working at Stony Lodge.
In 1992 Jimmy met the love of his life Phyllis Doster, after a few years of dating they married on November 9, 1996. Jimmy was a devoted family man who took joy in loving his wife, and raising his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He took great pleasure in spending time with his family playing chess, watching the latest movies, snacking, being on his computer, playing Rummy 5000 and spades, to which he was very competitive! He did not like losing!! You would often find him teaching, reading, and studying the bible with his children and grandchildren. Every Wednesday night was scheduled for at home family night and Bible Study. He treasured the word of God and he loved to share it with those he came in contact with.
At the age of 30 while under the leadership of the late Pastor Phinzy Bush, of Mount Zion Baptist Church he became an ordained Deacon and later Chairperson of the joint Deacon and Trustee Boards. One Sunday while visiting the Tabernacle of Prayer Revival Center he experienced a profound personal encounter with God unlike he experienced before. This catapulted his ministry in a new direction. He was later ordained an Elder while under the leadership of the late Dr. Eloise L. Young. He believed his call to ministry was that of providing for the widows and the orphans. He later joined the Roberson Memorial Christian Fellowship Church under the leadership of the late Pastor Catherine Griffin, his beloved sister in love, and served alongside his nephew and current Pastor Gregory Griffin, as the Senior Elder, Finance Chairperson and Teacher. He was a man of great faith who loved God and His people.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his mother Louise Bristow, his father Robert Bristow, his brother James Bristow and his sister Linda Bristow. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Phyllis Bristow, three sons Julius Cobbs, Eddie Bristow and Tyquan Bristow; Three daughters Carolyn Cobbs, Ashante Bristow, and April Bristow; Beloved grandchildren Jachi Randall, Jaire Randall, Madison Miller, Julius Cobbs Jr., Jariel Cobbs, Jurnee Cobbs, Amiriah Bristow and Catherine; Great grandchildren Jachi Randall Jr., Javari Randall, Ariah Randall, and Melia Cobbs; Devoted siblings Sarah Howell (Thomas - deceased) Margie Bristow, Terry Bristow, Haki Baruti, Sharon Charles (Randy); Loving Aunts Janice Graham, Dorothy Taylor, Margie Taylor, and Barbara Sue Taylor; Best friends Donna Coleman, Gary Nelson (his telephone buddy), John Woodberry (Cousin Runt), Charles Smith (Cousin Little Charles) and Cookie Thomas (Special Cousin); A large host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, friends and neighbors.
