Ms. Illa V. Granger, 97, of Fairmont transitioned to eternal peace on December 17, 2018.
She was born to the late Rev. Alonzo and Mollie McKellar McNair in Fairmont, NC.
Illa spent her childhood in Fairmont and accepted Christ as her personal savior at Aaron Swamp Baptist Church. She attended Robeson County Schools and earned a diploma from Robeson Community College at a later age. Mrs. Granger later joined First Baptist Church and remained an active member until her health declined. She served on various committees in the church and was described in the community as “Driving Miss Daisy” as she delivered voters to the polls. Mrs. Illa worked as a domestic in addition to being employed by several manufacturing plants in Fairmont.
At an early age, she married Nevoster Granger. They moved to Wilmington, NC and lived several years there before returning to Fairmont.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Nevoster Granger, two sons, Charles Granger, and Napolean Granger, and nine siblings.
She leaves to cherish her fond memories; her children, Shirley Granger Thompson of Fairmont, NC; David Granger (Eunice) of Fayetteville, NC; Carolyn Granger Stackhouse of Reisterstown, MD; Sylvia Granger of Fayetteville, NC; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews; special friends, Miss Lena C. McMillan, Ms. Ruby Campbell, and Mr. Charles Kemp. Also near and dear to her include Mr. Charles Mack, Mr. Talmadge Killens, and Mr. Augusta Thompson.
