Joan Lewis Washington, the daughter of the late Collins Madison Lewis Senior and Vernell Smith Lewis was born in Bladen County, North Carolina on September 28, 1945. She completed her earthly journey September 19, 2019 at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Novella.
Joan attended Bladen County School System and graduated from Spaulding Monroe School in 1963. Upon completion of high school, she matriculated to Durham Business College and received an Associates Degree in Business.
Joan was united in marriage to W.C. Washington on December 29, 1968. Unto this union, two sons were born.
Joan accepted Christ at an early age and was an active member of Bryant Swamp Baptist Church. Deaconess Washington served as the Financial Secretary/Treasurer and was the President of the Senior Choir.
Joan was a member of the Bladen County Community College Board of Trustees. She served on the BB&T Advisory Board and was Chairman of the Bladen County Health Board. Joan and W.C. Washington have owned Washington’s Mens Store since 1973. Joan worked there proudly day to day alongside her husband and son until she was no longer able to earlier this year.
Joan was a proud wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, confidant and faithful servant of the Lord. She kept a positive attitude and had a resilient spirit that endured during even the most difficult times in her life. She was truly a joy to be around. Her beautiful spirit was infectious and she was loved and respected by all.
Joan leaves to cherish her fond memories her loving and devoted husband of 50 years; two sons, Wesley Washington of Lumberton, NC and Scott Washington (Monica) of Glen Allen Virginia; a special niece Charisse Stephens of Florence, SC; two sisters, Diane Stephens of Lumberton, NC and Denise McMillan of Bladenboro, NC; one brother, Collins Madison Lewis Junior (Linda) of Garner, NC; two grandsons, Liam and Landon Washington; one aunt, Alice Robinson (Joe); two uncles, David Smith and William Singletary; three sisters-in-law, Helen King, Christine Washington, and Syvallah Washington; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
